Passion For The Business
To the owner of 99 Percent Hair Studio, Jaron Lu, hairdressing is not just a job, but an art that he is passionate about. He struggled to find a platform where he could express his creativity and make money as well. He realised that even though there were many ardent individuals like himself, the problem was that “many of them could not find a balance between sales an art”. That was when Jaron decided to create his own platform. Hence, the birth of 99 Percent Hair Studio.
Keeping a grip of the younger generation of hairdressers…
We need to communicate with them. They are a group of people with creative ideas and passion. In this industry, it is not necessary to have too many restrictions and control. Freedom is what every hairdresser wants; so we have to set a good system, yet give room for their creativity.
Managing salon staffs...
Our studios are based on fun, freedom, and fairness as our objective. Different positions are assigned with different responsibilities, allowing them to accomplish their goals in their own way, supporting them with assistance and advice when necessary. As part of the management, we ought to establish and improve the system. All staff can provide their advice to perfect the system. This helps in enhancing their growth, setting good examples and achieving their goals step by step.
Overcoming challenges...
One of the biggest challenges faced is that there is a lack of young people who are willing to invest themselves in this industry. Generally, they think the service industry has long working hours and work is service-oriented based. At present, we prove that with our lifestyle in this industry, as long as we work hard, everything is possible. We are actively developing training strategies that make it easier for them to master the skills in a shorter time, upgrading their self-values, learning more than just skills. Letting the younger generation feel that this industry can be enjoyable.
Milestones and achievements…
In 2017 we became part of Wella’s “dream team and were Wella’s only flagship store in Singapore. The following year, we participated and performed in hair shows in Singapore and Bangkok. This year, we have Nioxin’s advance care boutique.
Business secrets for expansion…
I believe that as long as the goals are set, systems are improvised. Step-by-step expansion is possible through teamwork. Currently, 99 Percent Hair Studio is still in the process of developing, relying on the team's hard work. Additionally, digital marketing and social media are very important. Over the years, we've been strengthening on our social media platforms, receiving and sharing information. This allows people to understand 99 Percent Hair Studio better.
Advice to future salon owners...
I think future salons can consider extending a comprehensive range of services under one roof such as hair, nail and makeup services. This will help to increase profits. It is, however, a big challenge. It is not easy to start a business, furthermore maintain a business. It is necessary to constantly understand the changes and development of the market.
